Back ache, Back pain, Sciatica and Muscle Spasm

The NICE guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommend manual treatment such as Osteopathy for the treatment of Low back pain and Sciatica
From occasional niggles to severe symptoms, it is safe to be treated by an Osteopath.
  • Sciatica may come on on its own or with back pain and is usually felt as pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in your legs and/or feet. Osteopaths are trained to assess and treat sciatica.
  • Back pain can range from discomfort now and then to attacks of severe pain. Osteopaths are trained to assess and treat the whole range.
  • Muscle Spasms are very painful. They are usually your body’s means of protecting you by keeping your back braced for a short while. Once your back problem starts to improve the spasm will wear off. We will offer you treatment and advice on how to help this along.

At your first appointment we will:

a)  start off by investigating the underlying causes of your symptoms through asking about the history of your problems, assessing your posture, movements and your reaction to some simple tests (such as reflexes)
b)  explain to you the diagnosis reached and, with your consent, treat you based on that diagnosis using a range of treatment techniques chosen to suit your complaint and your body type
c) explain how quickly we expect you to feel better after this treatment, tell you some simple do’s and don’ts, show you some exercises where necessary, advise you  how many treatments we think your condition may need.
At the end of your appointment there is time to pay for your consultation and book your next appointment if one is necessary.
In between appointments please ring or email us if you have any questions.

Treatment for Back pain and Sciatica

We choose treatment techniques to suit your symptoms and body type. We will discuss the treatment options with you as we go along and only use techniques that you are happy with.

Osteopaths’ range of techniques includes:

physical manipulation, stretching, massage, and other gentle techniques such as cranial, we may use a form of Acupuncture (dry needling) too.

The Secret of our Success? Osteopaths recognise that there may be many contributing factors to the symptoms. Therefore we evaluate not only the area which is producing symptoms but also associated areas that may be contributing to the issue. We also consider any past trauma and your posture, lifestyle and occupation, and family’s health history as well. In this way we aim to identify all the causes of your problems and help you deal with as many as you can.
