All babies cry but if your baby cries excessively you will instinctively know
this and recognise that there may be something out of the ordinary upsetting
them.
Cranial Osteopathy may ease the aches and pains or release the tension that may
be making your baby cry.
An overtired baby can scream as if in pain so how do you know if it is tiredness
or pain that is making them cry?
Key clues are yawning and staring off into space just before the crying starts.
What if they fight sleep and seem unable to relax? Cranial Osteopathic treatment
may ease any tension or niggley aches that may be keeping them from relaxing.
During a study on Cranial Osteopathy, some parents perceived the following
changes in their children’s behaviour: reduced colicky crying, improved sleep, less unsettled irritable
behaviour and increased quiet happy spells.
For babies who cry a lot and like to be held for hours on end many parents try
slings or papooses or swinging or vibrating chairs. These offer your baby
soothing motion whilst leaving your hands free to get on with a few essential
tasks. They will also give your arms, shoulders and back a rest.
If you find that you are regularly experiencing aches or pains in your back,
shoulders, pelvis, legs or arms then Osteopathic treatment may help.
If your baby wants holding a lot it may be down to tension or pain. Cranial
Osteopathy may help with this and leave them able to be content when awake and
to sleep without difficutly.

If the cause seems to be wind, make sure you burp your baby as well as you
possible can after each feed.
Baby’s who don’t burp easily all day often suffer with tummy ache in the early evening, which
may make them cry.
If nothing you have tried eases the wind problem and it continues to be difficult to get a burp up, Cranial Osteopathic treatment
may help by alleviating muscle tension in your baby’s tummy (tension in the tummy may act as a barrier to burping).

Dummies may be useful in that "sucky" phase i.e.the first three months or so but
it is very important to remember that it should be withdrawn at around 6 months
- before your baby gets really assertive - or you’ll have a battle on your hands.
By 6 months, when a baby wants to soothe themselves to sleep, they
can suck their fingers or thumb or take to a blanket or favourite toy instead of
a dummy.
The benefit of fingers or thumb over a dummy is that they never go missing and
you can’t suck them AND play so they tend only to be used when your child is sleepy.
Are finger and thumb-sucking potentially more of a problem habit than a dummy?
If thumb sucking continues long term it may be because your child feels
physical or mental tension. Physical tension may be alleviated by Cranial
Osteopathy.

Other than the obvious causes of crying in babies eg hunger, wanting a cuddle,
wanting to change position, having a dirty nappy or signaling the need to sleep
what else could cause a baby to cry?
They may:
