welcome to county osteopaths
It is common but not normal for babies to vomit.

They may posset (posseting is when a baby regurgitates small amounts of stomach contents) if overfull or if they are having difficulty bringing up wind. Winding them half way through a feed may help.

Vomiting on the other hand (where a baby brings up considerably more than a mouthful and usually with some force) suggests something is wrong.
If it happens regularly it needs to be investigated (one-off occurrences of vomiting are probably due to the baby eating too much, eating too fast or perhaps having a mild stomach bug and are probably nothing to worry about).

Two common causes of frequent vomiting  are dairy intolerance and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux.

Dairy intolerance as a cause of vomiting in babies: - Cow’s milk may not be the ideal food for human beings that we have allways believed. Dairy intolerance is increasingly being recognised as a cause of recurrent health problems in those who suffer from it.

Babies who are dairy intolerant will react to all standard formulas as these are made from cow’s milk. They will also react to breast milk if their mother drinks cow’s milk or eats foods made from cow’s milk. The dairy intolerant infant will usually vomit after each feed or have diarrhea.

Vomiting due to dairy intolerance will be cured by cutting dairy out of the diet. Their are a variety of dairy free formulae and breast feeding mothers must go on a dairy free diet. For more information see Dairy Intolerance. For more information on Reflux please click here.
